Thread: how to unlock a a lock after a failed install (SOLVED)

hi guys, tried install dropbox , failed leaving me problem.
using ubuntu 12.04 lts on acer aspire 1
have tried correct problem opening synaptic package manager keeps on telling me program using it. tried pasted suggestion below comes up.

sudo apt-get install -f
[sudo] password kevin:
e: not lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: resource temporarily unavailable)
e: unable lock administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), process using it?

looked in /var/lib/dpkg , there file locked in there ! stumped go here.

suggestions ???

code:
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

NIK SELECTIVE TOOL INTERMITTANT FAILURE.

ref: win7-64 /ps cs6 /google-nik collection.   after working "a time", select brush option in nik plugin, & when image "re-opens" in ps, plugin has selected ps brush tool, & can paint on effect i'd created, selective tool interface fails open, & there's no way apply or discard effect. at point ps "hung", waiting command either apply, or discard brush effect, can't done without selective tool interface; , way out, ctrl/alt/del close photoshop-- & lose work!  (results in ps appscrash result). the selective tool folder contained selectivepalette.8li file, along seltoolinst.cfg (instructional script tool??), , hdrefexpro2.jsx file. nik told me hdrefexpro2.jsx file did not belong there, & delete it, , sent me seltoolinst.cfg file replace existing one; , fixed problem short time! now works awhile, fails.---wont open either brush command, or automate. i check folder, & "something" has placed/re-placed deleted  hdrefex...
