Selecting All Neutral/Greytones

hi,

 

i curious if knows clever way select of neutral/greytones in image (my images have both colors , greytones). i've experimented color range, can't seem refine selection point want (not close honestly). these complex selections , grey interspersed throughout image. can image there's way this, haven't found online of yet. appreciated!

here's thought, if having issue getting midtones, select shadows save channel, select highlights save channel, select both channels invert selection, should left midtones.

i have not tried method think should work. why said thought, lol.

NIK SELECTIVE TOOL INTERMITTANT FAILURE.

ref: win7-64 /ps cs6 /google-nik collection.   after working "a time", select brush option in nik plugin, & when image "re-opens" in ps, plugin has selected ps brush tool, & can paint on effect i'd created, selective tool interface fails open, & there's no way apply or discard effect. at point ps "hung", waiting command either apply, or discard brush effect, can't done without selective tool interface; , way out, ctrl/alt/del close photoshop-- & lose work!  (results in ps appscrash result). the selective tool folder contained selectivepalette.8li file, along seltoolinst.cfg (instructional script tool??), , hdrefexpro2.jsx file. nik told me hdrefexpro2.jsx file did not belong there, & delete it, , sent me seltoolinst.cfg file replace existing one; , fixed problem short time! now works awhile, fails.---wont open either brush command, or automate. i check folder, & "something" has placed/re-placed deleted  hdrefex...
