Thread: "xdg-desktop-menu: No writable system menu directory found" (Mathematica install)

i'm trying install mathematica 9.0.1 on work laptop, running maverick. (i know, know... )

enter installation directory, or press enter select /usr/local/wolfram/mathematica/9.0: >   installing...  [*************************************************************************************************************************]  type directory path in wolfram mathematica script(s) created, or press enter select /usr/local/bin: >   installation failed. see /usr/local/wolfram/mathematica/9.0/installerrors.
the installerrors file has 1 line:

xdg-desktop-menu: no writable system menu directory found.
i found whole pile of confusing google results. i've gathered error apparently has *something* installer trying install .desktop file. i'm not sure fix is. can offer suggestion?
