it not possible load ubuntu onto box, according wikipedia, can apparently load debian or gentoo. however, have compile source. if willing leave linux , go unix (which 'nix designed for) there ports available of openbsd or netbsd. unix prove best , easiest option. need learn different commands, isn't hard once hang of things. if load familiar desktop gnome onto either bsd, feel right @ home everyday use. play around both pcbsd , solaris (sorry, no ports of either sgis, i'm afraid) on vm , it's quite fun , educational. unix community every bit vibrant linux one, although must used fact more eclectic , out-there.

sgi uses mips processor, different architecture of intel or amd cpus. if interested, wiki , google it. it's bad these architectures have been largely sidetracked 800 lb gorilla, intel , 400 lb challenger, amd. there time cpu landscape, ppc , alpha, more interesting of today's. that's way goes suppose.

think have cool , interesting project there, if you've got time , inclination working. if proceed, post , let know how getting on.

here's link openbsd download page.
here's 1 netbsd.
