Thread: Vnc, is this safe?
i been looking vnc today, i've never had use before know nothing mum asked me install linux mint on laptop i'm sure i'll needing it.
need knows field give me green or red light if method safe use, know vnc on internet can bit of touchy subject regards security.
i'm comfortable ssh, have secure connection established ssh (no password, rsa keys etc.) lets assume here ssh connection safe , sound don't off topic. anyway here's quick run-down of think okay.
server:
i've opened vino (the standard vnc server in mint, think ubuntu too) , chosen share desktop others , allow control of it, i've selected option server has authorise each connection allow vnc session (no password, i'll ask turn on , when need it).
client: (eeepc test host)
i've installed remmina use client. first step here forward ssh portthen i've opened remmina , used localhost server port 2808 (randomly chosen)code:ssh -l 2808:localhost:5900 eeepc
connection request pops on server , after mum clicking connect i've started own remote desk, great.
big question, safe, green light or red light? @ least in terms of general home use (excluding risk of high-profile attacker targeting dear old mum)
many
regards
mark
it's not unsafe (since presumably mum's router not port forwarding port 5900) if going insist on ssh tunneling may tell vnc server accept connections localhost 5900 closed - creating tunnel doesn't that, afaik
default vino-server option seems have been omitted gui need dig dconf - either installing graphical dconf editor or via command line as
this give layer of protection if got inside lan (in addition firewall running on machine).code:dconf write /desktop/gnome/remote-access/network-interface "'lo'"
