Thread: 12.04 installation, Windows 7 on primary drive, Ubuntu on a separate drive

i have 5 physical hard drives connected when trying install ubuntu in normal dual boot system. windows 7 professional main ssd, , i'm using standard cd installer 12.04 during boot (no wubi).

managed install fine in past, time comes /dev/sde. instead, want empty drive, /dev/sdd chosen one.

detect other drives when chose more advanced option, allocate own partitions etc, i'm concerned may things further.

i've attached fdisk noted people use int past diagnose this. if need more, let me know.

as can see, /dev/sdd not empty, has ntfs partition spanning whole disk. ubuntu needs unallocated space, doesn't install on ntfs. if ntfs partition has no data on it, disk still allocated it.

open windows disk management , delete partition, leave space unallocated.

start ubuntu installer again , see if comes choice.

recommend manual install anyway, since gives best control. example, 5 disks bootloader might end on disk don't expect it, , computer might keep booting windows directly. i'm not sure how auto method decides install grub2 bootloader.
in manual option select disk want it. means need create ubuntu partitions youself too.
