levels adjustment not merging

i making starfield.  have black background.  have black background used noise filter on.  applied levels adjustment layer.  tried merging them when happens adjustment layer changes go away, leaving me noise layer same before adjustment had been applied.

 

i have tried using shift>option>cmd>e, , still doesn't work.  don't remember ever having issue. 

 

there has missing i've been searching forums , sites on hour trying figured out. 

 

im using cs5

 

thanks support can give. 

are view change happening when view set 100%?
