How to Bevel

i have upgraded mac , software , attempting continue artwork in old photoshop files have encountered problem. part of create pattern of solid colour shapes , use bevel , shadow make them appear three-dimensional. used simple older versions of photoshop, find bevels , other effects under filters. appears have create layers , there, try might cannot affect area have selected magic wand, insteat change entire document. sure there simple solution , forward having eyes open is.

the bevel , other layer styles not work selections.  work on boundries of layers.  if want add bevel effect area, can create new layer, make selection , fill selection color.  reduce fill opacity 0.  hide fill did, allow use layer style create bevels , whatever themselves.
