Understanding Track Matte Keys

i'm new keying , i've created has confused me.  basic understanding of track matte's cut hole through track being keyed in shape of selected track above can see through track below it.

 

in first example did , worked expected:

the first example strip scenes on track 3, "las vegas" title on track 2 , oceans 11 tracking shot on track 1.

 

 

in both examples track matte placed on track 2 , selected matte track 3.  both use matte luma.

 

in second example though have title on track 3, strip shots on track 2 , oceans 11 shot on track 1.

if track matte supposed in shape of track 3 don't understand it's doing.  appears work same there tint whats inside title letters.

basically don't understand doing in second example , explain me whats happening.
