Style Variable

i have long document text variable running headers along page edges. behind each running header on master pages, there black band. want color black change several different fill colors, when running header changes, define different "sections."

it's 1 document, no separate chapters or sections, @ point. see attached image.

is there way tie fill color of these colored bands running header changes when running header does? think i'm looking way make variable object style (fill) triggered running header change. have no experience writing scripts, willing try.

plan b unlink master items , manually recolor on each page.
