Thread: AHCI won't boot with six drives, IDE will.
i've disassembled freenas drive , moving drives on ubuntu machine (12.10).
pre-move: had 2 drives. 1 system (750gb) drive , 1 datadrive (1500gb) on abit ip35 pro mobo. has 6 sata ports on ich9 controller. has 2 esata ports on jmicron controller (not used)
after-move: 4 more drives. maxing out internal sata ports. computer halts should boot drive telling me there isn't boot drive. i've checked boot order right. doesn't matter if 6 drives i'm using, i've tried 6 different drives in 4 spots left on before moving on drives. tried different cables. i've tried different psu. i've tried having second psu power 2 of drives since had suspiciouns power problem. tried replacing 2 of drives freenas system make sure doesn't try boot zfs volume 4 drives part of.
did reset bios , didn't work. started messing sata settings in bios , booted 6 drives, ide instead of ahci. work ahci. not using ide port on mobo
have idea?
edit: did install ubuntu ahci enabled.
couple of thoughts:
- bios's "boot" flag set on bootable partition -- might check that, , make sure there 1 partition set way. , of course make sure bios upgraded current release.
- assume these hard disk drives, , no ssds. because ssds perform better in "legacy" or ide mode, , aren't recognizabe bootable devices bios's.
