Thread: ddclient: Is this DDNS client updating conditionally based upon IP change?
ubuntu 12.04 ddclient
not using ipcheck service. instead, running ddclient daemon on system directly read's modem's external ip , updates domain host's records reflect external ip.
have noticed daemon setting inside /etc/ddclient.conf
-is in seconds , many google searches show people setting 5 minutes couple of hours.code:# update time in seconds daemon=300
makes me wonder if ddclient doing update domain host each timeout or if first checking see if external ip has changed before decides whether or not take action , hassle domain host service update? (i had assumed last method...but now, not sure...)
know if conditional check before acts update domain host service??? i.e. going ban me @ moment using ddns!!!
thanks! appreciate thoughts on this.
i tried making reading perl script comment tip me off on question didn't find one. found on different web site referring ddclient answers question , puts worries sleep, although not using dyndns.org, rather updating domain host (namecheap) directly ddclient:
so, if reading correctly, ddclient not abusely update domain host, waits dynamic ip changed isp first. so, have ddclient daemon checking modem's status page every minute such external ip change , not abusing domain host. so, think good. hope answers else's question also...the general rule not send updates dyndns servers more once per fifteen minutes safe. if abuse free service delete account. keep in mind "daemon" directive in ddclient.conf file amount of time ddclient check local ip. ddclient contact dyndns if ip changes. if set "daemon" directive 1 minute allow ddclient @ interface every minute. if ip changes ddclient make connection dyndns.org. can of course force update dyndns "ddclient -force" , send ip if has not changed. sending updates ip has not changed considered abusive.
