Please Help - Photoshop Freezing Up!

hi, have photoshop cs2 windows installed on windows 7 laptop. open photoshop , getting worse. able work fine few days ago if resize window or start paint ``not responding`` , photoshop freezes.

 

any ideas causing this.thanks.

 

 

 

photoshop memory , image cache

cache levels: 6

available ram: 1707 mb

maximum used photoshop: 55% (938 mb)

 

os: windows 7

 

installed memory (ram): 3.00 gb (2.75 gb useable)

 

windows task manager says:

processes: 73

cpu usage: 63%
physical memory: 48%

 

total: 2814

cached: 1441

available:1440

free: 38

clear out space can on hard drive, , defragment it. photoshop requires lot of contiguous free space on drive scratch files ("ram overflow", put simply). on time, drive fills , gets fragmented.

 

that said, today's standards laptop severely underpowered. files bigger today when cs2 current. if intend keep using it, regular maintenance required.

NIK SELECTIVE TOOL INTERMITTANT FAILURE.

ref: win7-64 /ps cs6 /google-nik collection.   after working "a time", select brush option in nik plugin, & when image "re-opens" in ps, plugin has selected ps brush tool, & can paint on effect i'd created, selective tool interface fails open, & there's no way apply or discard effect. at point ps "hung", waiting command either apply, or discard brush effect, can't done without selective tool interface; , way out, ctrl/alt/del close photoshop-- & lose work!  (results in ps appscrash result). the selective tool folder contained selectivepalette.8li file, along seltoolinst.cfg (instructional script tool??), , hdrefexpro2.jsx file. nik told me hdrefexpro2.jsx file did not belong there, & delete it, , sent me seltoolinst.cfg file replace existing one; , fixed problem short time! now works awhile, fails.---wont open either brush command, or automate. i check folder, & "something" has placed/re-placed deleted  hdrefex...
