Need Help To Create a Subpicture For Menu Buttons

i've looked online, , adobe , other sources create custom subpicture (as in animation highlight buttons not provided default) , same thing: open menu in photoshop, select button folder , create new layer in each named (=1) , making shape.

 

the problem is, photoshop doesn't allow me open layers wants me simplify them, claims "not compatible". i'm still bit of newbie photoshop, pretty sure i've done instructed , genuinely @ loss now...

 

any appreciated! why oh why can't encore more intuitive...

i not sure doing. opening layer should not problem.

 

so let's on same page...

 

open encore, create new test project dvd, add menu. doesn't matter one.

 

right click on menu added, , pick "edit menu in photoshop." can "open menu" in photoshop (outside encore), simpler in long run edit encore.

 

you see button groups + symbol in front. , triangle (showing closed button group) left. click triangle, , should see layers in group. work?

now try doing before, in menu. work or ...?

NIK SELECTIVE TOOL INTERMITTANT FAILURE.

ref: win7-64 /ps cs6 /google-nik collection.   after working "a time", select brush option in nik plugin, & when image "re-opens" in ps, plugin has selected ps brush tool, & can paint on effect i'd created, selective tool interface fails open, & there's no way apply or discard effect. at point ps "hung", waiting command either apply, or discard brush effect, can't done without selective tool interface; , way out, ctrl/alt/del close photoshop-- & lose work!  (results in ps appscrash result). the selective tool folder contained selectivepalette.8li file, along seltoolinst.cfg (instructional script tool??), , hdrefexpro2.jsx file. nik told me hdrefexpro2.jsx file did not belong there, & delete it, , sent me seltoolinst.cfg file replace existing one; , fixed problem short time! now works awhile, fails.---wont open either brush command, or automate. i check folder, & "something" has placed/re-placed deleted  hdrefex...
