question is: when 13.04 released how update process work ? installer recognize upgrading existing system , upgrade o/s , preserving installed apps , files ?

the easiest way let update manager upgrade you, offer option afer 13.04 released. (and long have set update optionbs allow versions rather lts ones). it's quickest way, , leave files intact, , keeps programs assuming can work new release (shouldn't haver issues there unless have strange third-party applicatiosn or stuff you'ver compiled source code yourself).

if prefer use disc upgrade, installer give optiopn upgrade, still allows use of normal install options need bit carefull that. keep in mind eve disc, you'd still need working internet connection updates programs not on cd.

anyway, quite common option still personal files, or have separate /home partition them, , make fresh install of new release. doesn't take long in end, , might give less problems in cases. (persoanlly prefer normal upgrade method unless i'm jumping on releases or something)
