hi all, few days ago, had ubuntu 12.04 installed alongside windows 7 on dual boot partition across 2 different hard disks. needed re-size '/' running out of space. finding quite risky have involved moving many partitions around, decided wipe off hard disk , install ubuntu on scratch. therefore, did gparted. ran ubuntu 13.04 liveusb , first selected "do else" option. couldn't quite figure out there went , selected "install alongside windows 7". after installation, re-booted, selected ubuntu os-choice menu , got grub console! figuring problem first boot menu not directing "ubuntu" choice right partition, used easybcd in windows 7 change various partitions in vain. therefore stuck windows 7 , appreciate in figuring out problem is. below gparted screenshots of hard disks after ubuntu 13.04 installation, consideration - sdc.png sdb.png sda.png boot live mode, , install grub2

i'm wondering why neccessary, in every linux environment i've worked on far, enter root password when rebooting through terminal, when there's working reboot option in actual desktop environment anyway, doesn't require password? understand means approach works if have desktop environment installed , it's not possible reboot command-line-only linuxes without root access, don't understand philosophy behind it. (same goes shutdown) i think it's historical, unix (and linux) designed multi-user systems 10's or 100's of users logged on , working @ 1 time. imagine mess if shutdown , reboot without having proper credentials. hi all, got new vps (ubuntu 12) , works great. somehow @ midnight sharp , twenty past 5 am, network connection fails 30 minutes 1 hour or 2. happens everyday sharp. can't find error in log files. when connection via vnc thru host provider seems ok. low memory, low cpu usage, nothing strange. i've tring find problem last 10 days.... can't figure out. use help. in advanced j.a. with os fresh install connection alright, after installing apache, mysql , php connections starts fail again @ exacte same time. there no crons running @ time, no new processes running, there no special consumption of memory or cpu. when connected via vpn can check apache web server , mysql running usual, file site pages can dowloaded thru localhost, though cannot access them thu ip adress or domain name. don't know anymore. tried have in bag of tricks already. hosting provider stated there no connections issues on sid

i want have 2 partitions installs sharing same /home folder. in addition existing partition ubuntu 12.04, created new partition, installed lubuntu 13.04. after installing compiz , tweaking bit, changes /home partition must have affected other partition, because 12.04 boots can't make windows work. guess ubuntu depends on compiz work? can fix sort of incompatibility? anyone? is /home partition separate 2 os partitions? if should not compiz causing problem, perhaps differences in versions of of applications on both oss keep configuration files or folders in /home. may 1 of situations better keep /home in root partition of each os , share data partition. greetings, fresh installed 13.04 scratch , unity terribly slow. have tried binary drivers nvidia-304, nvidia-310 , nvidia-313, no luck. installing mate desktop check. suggestions? sds. i have 8 series card 3.13 drivers running well. unity , gnome shell, , xfce installed. beta tested , preformed clean installation of 13.04 final release . considering have newer graphics card don't know problem be. have tested compiz cube , other plugins on both beta , final releases. ok, stupidly clicked "upgrade" (bad idea, not try), , although distro upgraded raring ringtail, point boots, started getting lot of crap broken packages, no desktop wallpaper, etc, burn off ubuntu disc due having no spare flash drives nearby aren't being used either aren't dead or easy find, (cleared space on flash drive in use purpose), , clean install, , working again. going standard unity spin, , installing gnome 3.8 , cinnamon after everything's set up moral of story because can upgrade distro without disc clicking "upgrade," don't mean it's idea. learned hard way. p.s. tried gnome 3.8, it's sweet, it's perfect combo of old gnome , new gnome if either use classic mode or enable right extensions in normal gnome shell, applications , places menus, in addition, unity 7 shows lot of promise well. i clean install, never upgrade.

hi all, have formatted usb , used http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3 boot usb.. set boot option 1 usb , restart......it asks me choose whether want install along side windows7 have or want go ubuntu....when choose 1 st option says continue....when click on continue ....then says system going down reboot.......but after restarts....it doesnt reboot , goes through same steps has gone earlier asking me again whether should go installing ubuntu along side windows.....etc...i have tried 15 times...and same every time.. please me.... i have never used pendrivelinux don't know idiosyncrasies, if has any, suggest try booting live system rather going straight installation; let see if there hardware problem or incompatibility causing difficulties. sure .iso file used make usb not faulty in way; have checked md5sum of image against list @ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntuhas
