Thread: More of a why than a how (about rebooting)

i'm wondering why neccessary, in every linux environment i've worked on far, enter root password when rebooting through terminal, when there's working reboot option in actual desktop environment anyway, doesn't require password? understand means approach works if have desktop environment installed , it's not possible reboot command-line-only linuxes without root access, don't understand philosophy behind it.

(same goes shutdown)

i think it's historical, unix (and linux) designed multi-user systems 10's or 100's of users logged on , working @ 1 time.

imagine mess if shutdown , reboot without having proper credentials.
