Thread: Why do so many people mistake Linux for GNU?

i have found many users of gnu/linux mistake linux kernel whole gnu free software spectrum. let me clear things people.

in 1983 richard m. stallman (or rms), @ massachusetts institute of technology (or mit) majorly hacked off advent of proprietary closed-source software, , decided trigger off new operating system consisting of totally free software respects user's right view source code, copy code, edit copy , redistribute copy whilst letting users of copy redistribute , install new operating system onto many computers wish. operating system called "gnu"; many think of animal africa anogram "gnu not unix" because operating system may act unix not. operating system going pretty rms , newly-founded free software foundation, lacked important piece, last piece: kernel. not until 1991 when linus torvalds, computer science student @ university of helsinki, created linux kernel install last piece new gnu operating system.

although there 1 gnu operating system. many computer programmers have followed idea , created many gnu/linux operating systems (e.g. ubuntu) because not consist of totally free software , web applications, cannot labelled "free software" named "open source" instead. remember when use linux operating system, not; there no such thing linux operating system kernel - component of gnu/linux operating system.
