Thread: Swapfile disappeared, cannot suspend or hibernate PC

have been renning xubuntu 12.04 on old dell 4400 dimension desktop few months no issues. became intermittently sluggish in last few days & when noticed "suspend" button disappeared logout window discovered swapfile had disappeared.
manually created new 1g swapfile per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/swapfaq#addswap
new swapfile seems working fine - running free command in terminal gives like:
total used free shared buffers cached
mem: 766340 711836 54504 0 122544 166428
-/+ buffers/cache: 422864 343476
swap: 1048572 156 1048416

still not suspend, gives "no kernel support" error when try. havent seen major crashes & recent software installs have been regular ubuntu updates. not sure proceed here short of entire re-install & appreciate pointers.

update - suspend/hibernate issue not end of world, of more concem recreating swapfile did nothing general clunkiness of performance. importantly (for wife anyway), no longer stream videos smoothly. booted 3.2.0-38-generic kernel morning (from 3.2.0-39), , hey presto runs smoothly again! (and suspend back!) things must have gone bit haywire in recent update. next question - how force re-install of 3.2.0-39 kernel?
