missing codepage or helper program, or other error
in cases useful info found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

ps how web page become ugly ?

looks corrupted hdd or corrupted filesystem on it.

external hdd work on windows? if have access windows machine use "check disk" check , repair filesystem. can use "fsck" ubuntu 'check disk' better option since vfat.
