Thread: NTFS HDD stopped working after mount/unmount in Linux...

... or think @ least.

(apologies if doesn't belong in hardware forum, way. wasn't sure what's right place ask.)

i'm trying keep short, need summarize backstory of problem:

few days ago thinkpad sl510 stopped working. more precisely, after turning on, screen stayed black (though under power), , no further activity happens. cannot bios, nothing. still trying figure out wrong (i able rule out ram, cpu, broken usb , other problems).

wasn't able rule out hdd cause of problem, took out , put external case , connected 2nd pc runs (x)ubuntu. relieve hdd recognized, , mounted, , did quick check see if files still readable. were.

here's real problem started: tried unmount device (in thunar), got error. didn't think of , turned off pc. when tried mount hdd again later, again under xubuntu, 2 out of 3 partitions not mountable anymore (after 3 of them mounte before).

here's error message in detail:

error mounting: mount exited exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup: magic: 0x43425355 size: 4096 usa_ofs: 1194 usa_count: 65535: invalid argument
actual vcn (0x80000e0000b0000) of index buffer different expected vcn (0x0).
failed mount '/dev/sdc1': input/output error
ntfs either inconsistent, or there hardware fault, or it's a
softraid/fakeraid hardware. in first case run chkdsk /f on windows
reboot windows twice. usage of /f parameter very
important! if device softraid/fakeraid first activate
, mount different device under /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). please see 'dmraid' documentation
more details.
i've searched message, , found topics on forum well. both error message , forum replies suggest run chkdsk /f under windows, tried (on friend's windows pc). 1 of partititons of hdd (the lenovo recovery partition) recognized without problems. partition chkdsk returned no problem.

2 other partitions (the important ones, 1 'system', other holds of data) appear in windows "my computer", or @ least appear under drive letter, not accessible, , windows explorer doesn't manage read size, etc. also, running chdksk /f on them results in error.

hdd in question 320 gb, 5400 rpm, sata interface disk. don't know manufacturer, can find out. file system ntfs.

to summarize: notebook doesn't boot anymore, , cannot rule out (nor confirm) hdd cause. however, able mount under xubuntu, , open several files without problems. when unmounted disk, error occured , since 2 partiations of hdd cannot mounted/read anymore, neither in linux nor windows. no idea if it's result of unmount error in linux, or part of original problem caused notebook stop working.

my question: possible unmount error caused ****up in filesystem/boot sector/whatever, , reason why can't mount 2 partitions anymore? or can ruled out? also, idea can either make hdd work again, or @ least recover data? have hard time believing data lost, since hour ago able read fine under linux, , didn't format/overwrite anything...

couple of comments ...

first, if can connect drive windows pc running win7, launch disk management utility (with drive connected). scroll down list of drives. may see external drive listed there, without drive letter. see if let assign drive letter. if does, run chkdsk on it.

second, should download , burn cd of minitool partition wizard boot cd. partitioning tool, , when boot (with drive connected), see if allow run check on external drive.
