Thread: Kernel upgrade kills VGA controller

hey guys,

upgraded xubuntu 12.10 13.04 tonight running
code:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
, kernel 3.5.x 3.8.x

i'm on dell studio laptop, (core 2 duo, 3gb ram, ati mobilty radeon 3000 series).
when rebooting in, system didnt recognize vga controller anymore (*-display unclaimed when "lshw").
tried hundreds of different solutions fix it, amongst them:
  • installing fglrx , reinstalling
  • installation via amdccl , aticonfig
  • complete reinstall of kubuntu-desktop
  • fix packages
  • dpkg-configure xserver-xorg
  • ...

nothing helped. guess kernel update's problem?
else having similar issues?

it's okay, manually boot older kernel in grub.

else do?

hi

have looked in log files ?

code:
/var/log/xorg.0.log
that start looking clues happening.

narrow down search using grep.

code:
grep "ee" /var/log/xorg.{0,1,2,3}.log{,.old}
if returns nothing, you'll need visual inspection of 1 of log files know boot bad.

that's start.

how far boot process btw ?

kind regards
