Thread: The art of backing up your system

hi all,

bit of history,

here go, want discuss , learn right or different ways of backing operating system.
years ago remember have learned use server 2003 built in backup program backup , schedule backups of folders , files. example shared folders on windows 2003 file-server. , think there possibilities of doing full backups and/or changes etc. , since has kinda stuck in head 1 of right ways it. after years, , view years professionally working in (some support / sysadmining, more client side) realize never used it.

today,

now, nowadays, view years use more linux on workstation('s)/desktops , servers to. , tinker systems use. , since in linux have power @ hand can break system. no matter if workstation/desktop or server. understand there alternative methods using virtualbox or other testing machine testing. discussion. not solution. have learned use clonezilla live cd clone dualboot workstation/desktops hard disks image on external drive. clone before know im going make major change system. way cloning whole system disk image on external drive can put if goes wrong. , systems state before started make huge changes.

explanation,

why use clonezilla boot disk instead of build in windows/linux program can backup system? point thinkering system u can render system unbootable. , clonezilla solves this. drawback is. if have multiple operating systems on computer. , have multiple computers, way easy fill external storage pretty fast. , far know im not sure can use built in backup tool backup disks comletely because if render system unbootable how going put backups made built in program back?

future or question itself,

looking @ things im doing , im trying achieve, there way can tell me improve workflow? mean wondering if there program can use backup system , able make full backup , make kind of incremental backups? because lets have linux on workstation/desktop now. im planning install video drivers. , dont know if goig break or not. make full system backup. had full system backup before installed video drivers. because before intalled dual boot. , did backup of dual boot. because have spent time on setting bual boot to. way can go last working state. , offcourse delete old backups regularly. example after installed outlook 2007 in wine , backed also. , still works fine. no longer need video driver version backup. if added video driver or wine or outlook dont need make whole hard disk backup. because added view programs system. , possible somehow backup additional changes. not kind of having backup whole view tens of gigabytes backup view tens of megabytes.

let me know if u can point me documentation or information learn this,

in advance,
nikolai

what use business or server should different might use home system requirements different. consider home system has little data changing on daily basis, not full backups incremental rsync , plan full system reinstall when hard drive fails.

has different choices , methods.
