Thread: No display from descrete graphics cards after install of 12.10

its long story why i'm on fresh install of 12.10, suffice never found successful method installing nvidia drivers in previous 12.10 install. system nvidia 550ti, asrock extreme4 socket 1155, intel i5-3570k, seasonic x-650 platinum psu, , had been running nouveau month, , prior ati radeon 4850 since november 2012.

after many hours , successful repairs , unsuccessful re-attempts, gave , re-installed 12.04.1 (64 bit) alternate media. graphics, while text or n-curses style windows, worked during install, nothing after grub splash (the big ugly one, not higher res). motherboard didn't show errors, nothing.

tried installing 12.10 (64 bit) live media. again, during install nvidia graphics working, running both of monitors. after install, continued work 3 reboots (the driver is/was listed "unknown" rather nouveau), same before: nothing.

pulled card , checked pci-express power: 12.2v
tried onboard graphics (intel 4000 hd), works (interestingly, bios reset pci-express default graphics still)!

re-inserted 4850 card, still nothing.
booted liveusb 4850 however, , same attempt @ nvidia 550 ti, i'm pretty sure os. not motherboard, psu or graphics cards.

haven't had make graphics work in ubuntu, using since 9.04. i'm frustrated...
