Thread: Ubuntu - Firewall and Antivirus software

i've seen quite few threads on forum ubuntu , linux in general safe firewall , antivirus software not needed.

when looking @ features of ubuntu 12.10 desktop, says "you can surf in safety ubuntu — confident files , data stay protected — built-in firewall , virus protection."

i'm wondering is:

1. why canonical add these pieces of software if ubuntu safe, has changed?

2. know name of firewall , antivirus software ubuntu has added in 12.10?

a firewall of description has (as far know) been there. it's not activated default. if you're behind router, may not need activate it. in other circumstances, such laptop in internet cafe, it's idea so. there threads ufw (the current firewall software) on these forums.

there's no built-in antivirus software. can install it, it's used looking windows viruses, might important if exchange files windows users. think statement might marketer's way of saying system inherently resistant viruses.

said, there other types of malware such rootkits, flash/java vulnerabilities , browser attacks, 1 still needs sensible online. no system bulletproof.
