Thread: hostname mailname

i struggling setting our mailserver , have question don’t seem able answer internet.
original server name server88.456.xxx.xx.famail.co.uk

trying change jack.ourname.com – there record jack.ourname.com , ourname.com, , fasthosts have done whatever thing make jack.ourname.com reverse lookup. there mx record mail.ourname.com

in main.cf (and in etc/hostname , etc/hosts) hostname = jack.ourname.com. have read should jack in places , jack.ourname.com in others. should be?

sudo hostname gives jack.ourname.com , sudo hostname –f gives same i.e. jack.ourname.com
postconf –n gives myhostname = jack.ourname.com
gives mydomain = ourname.com

here comes dumb question….. should in /etc/mailname? should mail.ourname.com or jack.ourname.com or ourname.com

have lot of other things sort out, not simple trying each of above in turn.

can send mail external addresses quite happily, not mailaddress1@ourname.com or ourothername.com virtual domain , mail account on server.
before tried change servername – send ourname.com , ourothername.com not outside.

have done postmaps every file has ever changed, restarted postfix, , rebooted whole server.

mailname problem, or hostname should jack or there else together?

have read , printed out lot of postfix.org stuff , useful, doesn’t nail these.

the mailname in "/etc/mailname" file qualified domain name (fqdn) resolves 1 of host's ip addresses.
