Thread: GPT Disk Conversion for dusl-boot system

i have kubuntu 12.04 system 3 disks. kubuntu boot disk /dev/sda , has 1 ext4 partition. on other 2 disks /dev/sdb , /dev/sdc, first partition linux raid partition, , use linux software raid , mdadm mirror these partitions in raid1 mirrored volume. second partitions on /dev/sdb , /dev/sdc ntfs partitions, on installed win7 boot disk c: , win7 data disk d: respectively. thereafter tried upgrade win8, and, perhaps unfortunately, deleted win7 install on /dev/sdb (i haven't touched linux raid partitions on first partitions of /dev/sdb , /dev/sdc, , linux software raid1 volume continues work fine.

system has uefi bios, , found out in process install win8 on uefi system have create uefi-compatible win8 usb flash install stick. ok, did that, , booted win8 install that. win8 install started up, when select ntfs partition on /dev/sdb, win7 c disk, , started win8 install, error message "on efi systems, windows can installed on gpt disks".

take /dev/sdb , /dev/sdc mbr disks, , believe linux supprts gpt disks , there's way convert them gpt disks ntfs partitions before .... i's unclear means linux software raid partitions. believe gpt has different scheme disk boot sectors, , while i'm far expert on linux software raid, have impression gpt changes boot sector layout , mdadm may have information on boot sector, screwing raid1 volume if convert. can tell me if can done, , if describe and/or point me link how? thx, gus

boot sectors not issue, fact writing new partition table destroys data, is. i'm not aware of way write new gpt table without destroying partitions (which means data also).

on other hand, win8 can install in legacy mode far know. have careful how boot dvd/usb. if boot in uefi mode, try install in uefi mode. if boot in legacy mode install in legacy mode , using msdos tables shouldn't problem.

have uefi bios according partitions listed, not using uefi boot, great. uefi need fat32 efi system partition, didn't mention need one.

go bios , disable uefi boot, select legacy or depending how option called. make sure never boot install media in uefi mode.

after boot win8 dvd/usb , should install fine on current ntfs partition(s) on disks msdos tables. might need create ntfs partition in advance, , not using win8 installer because might try create small system reserved partition if use installer make partitions.
