Thread: how to install onto HDD

hi have partitioned existing 40gb hdd 2 x 20gb primary partitions. c: drive has xp pro installed (32 bit) , want install ubuntu on other f: drive.

have had several attempts no joy. hp pavillion desktop (circa 2001)
40gb hdd & 512 mb ram

keep hitting "root" problem if drive not formatted or , cant find straight forward option install on f: drive.

im not @ this, failed understand forum q & a's please straight forward step step instructions appreciated. thanks

sorry, hoping able dual boot if complicated can change f: drive logical if ubuntu still operate on ok.

you don't have prepare partition ubuntu beforehand. leaving enough unallocated space on drive enough. installer has format partition anyway, windows cannot make required ext3/4 partition. anyway, f drive won't known f drive in linux. drive letters windows terminology.

512mb small. recommend try install lubuntu. model hp pavillion exactly? processor in it?
