Thread: Not sure whats wrong

hi,

started using ubuntu today bear newbieness.

have vps ubuntu 12.04 64bit installed. (can changed 32bits, earlier versions, or centos, etc. too)
following directions on websites, installed ubuntu desktop , vnc4server through putty.
when use vnc viewer(tried ultravnc , tightvnc java) , connect desktop show (i think called unity)

problem is, when click programs on left bar(firefox , such), nothing happens... icon flash 4 times , thats it.
can click on menu bar , dropdown list shows up, clicking on list nothing.
can create new folder on desktop right-clicking , can delete it.

haven't setup users yet. done in root access.

want @ least use firefox flash player on vps.
problem?

edit:libre office doesnt flash when clicked.
right click , "change background" show window (something explorer) automatically close window after second.

is there in $home/.xsession-errors after click on in left menubar (such error messages, etc). can @ file terminal, assuming can pull up.

other option might try xrdp ... use instead of vnc, , allows windows machine remote desktop view linux desktop without installing additional on windows side. try:

sudo apt-get install xrdp ... reboot linux machine , try remote desktop in , see if works better. might narrow down problem too.
