Thread: Something basic lacking in Ubuntu: simple way to install new themes

i've got ubuntu 13.04 beta installed, , go settings > appearance, , see 4 themes. no button such "add new theme" or of sort. linux newbie perspective, no good. if google "ubuntu themes," can find sites, downloading theme gives me .tar.gz file.

i'm surprised hasn't been addressed far. great efforts have been made make ubuntu simple , user friendly (yet powerful enough power users). yet clicking theme dropdown , showing 4 themes , no option or hint install new ones kind of mind-boggling.

i'm not looking on how install themes, i'm sure around , figure out. wanted share perspective , point out there still simple things being overlooked ubuntu gains more market share (http://www.alienware.com/ubuntu/).

install downloaded themes or icons in 12.04-12.10

install gnome tweak tool / advanced settings making theme selections software center .

use gtk 3.6 themes 12.10-gtk 3.4 12.04 check in theme description @ download location.

download , extract theme packages , hold folders on desktop until needed . (right click extract here)

(single user) create .themes , .icons folder in home / hidden folders . use crtl + h open hidden folders in nautilus.

(all users) use gksudo nautilus in terminal open nautilus root , navigate > file system / usr / share / themes or icons .

place folders in either location . use tweak tool/ advanced settings make theme selections . logout - in may required before themes visible in advanced settings .

there theme ppas available if don't want install manually. http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/2-bea...gtk-36-or.html
