Thread: GUI completely gone after updating ubuntu 12.04

hi, i'm new ubuntu need little help. i've dual booted using wubi , installed ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit. since installed lubuntu-desktop , it. has been working fine while. every , i'm prompted update packages security reasons etc, , install updates. latest set seems have knackered gui , can't back. after update starts text-based login instead of graphical one. i'm sure of updates x-server , xorg don't know enough ubuntu know if relevant!

i've tried googling around solution, , other people suggest 'sudo apt-get update' , 'sudo apt-get upgrade' i've done without achieving anything. still can't start lightdm: if 'sudo start lightdm' or 'sudo service lightdm restart' screen bunch of statements, last 3 of are:

stopping system v run level compatibility [ ok ]
starting lightdm display manager [ok ]
stopping userspace bootsplash [ ok ]

, flashing underscore, , nothing happens. can there hit power button reboots pc. i've tried sudo startx, leads 'no screens found' , installing gdm same thing happens. running fine before update nvidia display drivers 304.xx. i've tried doing dpkg reconfigure lightdm, , completes fine doesn't change anything.

pretty annoying i've done cause recommended updates ... not idea? :s advice on how desktop welcome! don't want fresh install i've got packages , gui configured way like.

see if there's xorg.conf in /etc/x11.
if there is, rename else , reboot.
xorg should auto-detect without it.

should system backup before installing new updates.
