Thread: (Almost) Every time package installed in terminal, bootup goes to terminal

i apologize if isn't in right place, if it's not, can mod please move thread?


hi!

installed gedit on laptop, (and few other applications through terminal), , pretty 9 times out of 10 when reboot after package installed through terminal, end booting basic terminal thing (i'm sorry bad terminology, linux newbie). have ctrl-alt-f1 log in. give commands startx or startxfce4 either "display initialized on display 0, delete log/xorg.0.log (or extent, delete says can't start server)

here, either have sudo killall -9 xorg (which sometime works) login screen boot or either update packages through aptitude (which works) before issuing startx or startxfce4.

2 options have been go-to me in way fixing it, on 1 occasion fixes didn't work , kind of gave , kept restarting till worked.

assistance in absolutely awesome.

ps running xubuntu 12.10

what graphics card using?

there's no need reboot after installing packages, except new kernels , kernel modules (including video drivers).
