Print>Output>Printer Resolution question

hi,

i confused setting in illustrator's print dialogue box in output>printer resolution. illustrator offers number of predefined lpi/dpi combinations in drop down menu.

1- aren't lpi/dpi 2 parameters print shop controls? in other words, print shop sets 2 parameters , provide file ppi resolution (i have seen rule of thumb stating ppi > 2x lpi)

2- why not possible set lpi , dpi independently in illustrator? (illustrator offers preset combinations of two)

this cs4. thanks.

can post screen grab of drop down?  illustrator resolution independent, can select raster effect resolution ( low, medium, high ) , printer resolution ( again, low, medium, high ) in effects menu , print dialog respectively.  i'm not familiar cs4 settings l-p-i in combination d-p-i.  lines per inch defined in rip along screen angles , halftone shape.  let me address each of questions...

yes.  don't forget: ppi = pixels per inch = bitmap raster images; dpi = output resolution; typical dpi necessary render direct-to-plate 150lpi halftone screening = 5080 dpi.

you answered own question in #1; print vendor gives workflow requirements based on rip , print process particular project.  don't forget paper used in process should  dictate halftone frequency used in plate making process.

by way, thought said set lpi in illustrator?
