Thread: Help me find the right Buntu for me! (I Don't want to give up yet)

hello!

many years i've heard wonders of different buntu distros.
until decided try it. did download regular ubuntu 12.04 distro , installed on partition alongside current os (windows 8).
headaches until dawn. runs incredibly slow. run ok, want launch menu or app , freezes , hangs there minutes. tried changing kernel's swappiness, , logged using classic gnome (with no extras). nothing. compared windows 8 (which works seamlessly in netbook, it's windows , hate microsofts restrictive environment) thing crawling if anything.

specs are:
-acer aspire 1 netbook
-intel atom 1.6 ghz processor
-intel chipset graphics card
-2gb ram
-i gave linux partition system 30gb dedicated hdd space

know great stuff takes time , work right, why don't want quit yet. clueless, that's why started thread.
best guess right should try different distro of buntu (or of linux) don't know right me , limited specs.

i'm looking for:
-an os highly customizable
-an os can match windows 8 in speed , performance on netbook (i don't care boot times, general performance/smoothness)
-something looks (as in graphics) , not if brought 90's

appreciate guidance.

unity's interface might lag little on laptop, gnome classic should fine. said, lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net) lightest *buntu @ moment.

welcome open source, attitude refreshing.
