if used ubuntu in 2006, you're familiar old gnome 2 interface. lot has changed since 2006.
1. using ubuntu 11.10? @ tutorial bring old old interface http://www.webupd8.org/2011/08/insta...e-desktop.html.
if want gnome 2 experience should @ distributions other ubuntu offers mate, gnome 2 fork.
or better yet, try xubuntu or lubuntu. you'll find way around os.

2. file sharing via network ubuntu systems or windows computers? , want share, local files on computer?

3. suggest upgrade newer release because 11.10 nearing end-of-life. can clean install of 12.10 or @ least wait few more days ubuntu 13.04.
