all hdd give ghost (confusius 400 bc).

prevent teeth gnashing , hair pulling, believe wise move have backed files might needed , can't replaced or replicated new clean installation , installing available apps again.

but; folders/files should - forgetting rubbish , data files created since beginning? (what them more issue of emotion rather necessity).

appreciate advice on subject. storage space not problem, nor time backup.

few important directories in linux file system /etc, /home , /var . have them backed up.

can take snapshot of installed packages every , then.
code:
dpkg --get-selections > installedpackages.dat
and "the tao of backup".
