i have wondered same thing , researched pretty extensively no avail. still wondering if there hack approach using dates, loops or practically make home brewed interval timer. seems no. using date checking pretty ends emulating $sleep() tests. why adobe omitted common timers , intervals internal js beyond me, setinterval , settimeout useful, likewise lack of mouse events, both open entire new worlds of possibilities.

here thread in indesign forum speaking of "app.scheduletask" using bridge: app.scheduletask(script, delay [, repeat])

i tried "app.scheduletask" approach , never got working in illustrator however. <-- hope proves otherwise , says possible in illustrator, please let me know if do. otherwise don't think there solutions via js. maybe timer in applescript or vbscript running in background , working illustrator externally alternative.
