Thread: Gigabyte motherboard & Ubuntu 12.04.2 32/64 bit

i've done post result of reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/uefi. note on experiences gigabyte motherboard (ga-h61m-s2pc 2.0 8gb memory) , installing ubuntu 12.04.2. uefi bios not appear have parameters quickboot/fastboot or intel smart response technology (srt) or secure boot. these parameters have other aliases?

intended have ubuntu on pc's hard disk. advantages of uefi when case?

installed 12.04.2 64 bit usb stick created startup disk creator. did not pick (lsusb did not show it) logitech webcam use in skype, set virtual magnifying glass properly, , wine has have 32 bit prefix setup /etc/environment modified appropriately.

tried install 12.0.4.2 32 bit usb stick (created using startup disk creator). however, bios not let me said not have bootloader: interestingly bios shows uefi device. seems contradict article http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/secureboot_in_ubuntu_12.10/ which states "and part of our committment enabling new hardware on current lts release, backporting work inclusion in 12.04.2." (though mean done sometime after release of 12.04.2 in february 2013?). able install 12.04.2 32 bit dvd, presumably because bios did not show uefi. [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "efi boot on hdd" || echo "legacy boot on hdd" (from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/uefi) shows hdd legacy boot.

the quikboot/fastboot seems windows 8 setting skip or of bios/uefi startup. secure boot uefi setting microsoft windows 8 required implemented, motherboard vendors have not yet implemented it.
intel srt windows cache program uses small ssd. not sure can install have seen on newer ultrabook laptops. again make seem windows booting faster when recovering hibernating on fast ssd.

uefi has new features, future, users not understand it. if have ubuntu can install in either uefi or legacy/csm/bios mode.
suggest using gpt partitioning if booting in bios mode. uefi gpt partitioning required. convert uefi in future if desired. ubuntu boot gpt partitioning in bios or uefi, windows boot gpt partitioning uefi.

did find link gigabyte's uefi update page, did not save motherboard old. have major uefi/bios update convert newer motherboards had limited uefi full uefi.

since newer computers can run uefi, 64 bit version supports uefi. if have newer computer should installing 64 bit version anyway. not have issues of secure boot.
, updates uefi included in newer versions secure boot capability, use new version only.

need use 64 bit version of 12.10 or 12.04.2 , uefi menu boot flash drive in uefi mode. way install in uefi mode.
systems need quick boot or fast boot turned off in uefi settings. vital systems. best backup efi partition , windows partition first.
use windows disk tools shrink windows main partition, not create new partitions, if installing on same drive.

of 12.04.2, possible install on uefi systems secure boot enabled (using signed versions of shim, grub, , linux kernel). set ubuntu (desktop, alternate, , server) , edubuntu images due pressures of time; expect enable across entire ubuntu family 12.04.3. details:

installing grub uefi secure boot possible if have booted system using efi.

total space want ubuntu:
ubuntu's standard install / (root) & swap, better add partition /home if allocating on 30gb.:
if gpt - partitions in gpt primary:
gpt: 250 mb efi fat32 (for uefi boot or future use uefi, can have 1 per drive, if existing not attempt another)
gpt: 1 mb bios_grub no format (for bios boot not required uefi)
gpt or mbr(msdos)
ubuntu partitions - smaller root hard drive space limited.
if total space less 30gb use / not separate /home or standard install.
1. 10-25 gb mountpoint / primary or logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
2. 2 gb mountpoint /home logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
3. 2 gb mountpoint swap logical

depending on how memory have may not absolutely need swap having still recommended. not hibernate (boots fast enough me) if hibernating need swap equal ram in gib not gb. , if dual booting windows shared ntfs partition recommended. cannot create part of install, leave space. or partition in advance (recommended).
1 advantage of partitioning in advance installer use swap space speed install. herman tip.
