Thread: ASUS 1201HA (gma500) external monitor resolution problem

hello,
after enduring slide-show desktop experience win7 on netbook way long have decided try ubuntu slimmer , faster alternative. initial experiment 12.10 , gma500_gfx kernel module had rather discouraging results (never ending screen flickering, weird artefacts around cursor , image on external screen shaking horizontally point of being unreadable of time). have downgraded ubuntu 11.04 , emgd driver ppa:gma500/emgd , blown away how snappier computer has become. video playback , flash video both fluent , more importantly don't freeze whole system long time did on 12.10.

netbook quiet, cool , super fast. problem connecting external screen need work degree of efficiency. connecting screen vga output on computer had no effect. solution able find using configuration file , placing in /usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d/:

code:

the resulting resolution , aspect ratio on external screen incorrect, however. have tried changing modes "1600x900" line read: modes "1920x1200" had no effect. proper resolution not available in monitors configuration applet. instead cloned output both screens resolution toggling between 1366x768 , 1920x1080 on both screens use of fn+f8. commenting out internal screen serverlayout section causes system not boot, although point when freezes (at checking battery ... ok) external screen used properly.

under windows can use fn+f8 toggle between built in display, clone mode , extended desktop. can further disable internal screen , use vga port output using configuration software came intel driver. on ubuntu understand corresponding utility emgdui can't find documentation explaining how should used. running no arguments gives following output:

the detected modes not correct monitor , low 16:10 resolutions listed. in cloned mode using 1920x1080 performance still brilliant , nothing better continue using linux/emgd setup everyday work. not technical person , don't have linux experience guidance getting correct resolution , output on external screen appreciated. fonts blurry , hard read forced either use miniature netbook screen or windows 7 external monitor. if there way disable internal screen , use vga port more pleased minor issue comparison.

the problem is, both 11.04 , emgd unsupported. gma500 5years old, , more ever, seems dead end no support , no interest anyone.
