i bought great second hand workhorse online general linux tinkering , it's been great apart 1 irritating problem audio. laptop acer aspire. here install specs , hardware:

problem headphone jack nothing @ default. doesn't mute main speakers, won't put through sound @ all. solution found combination of these audio settings:

...nd use of black spdif audio jack. note green headphone jack doesn't work @ all. it's black spdif jack needs used headphones, combination of these things allow sound automatically muted , switched headphones when plugged in , unmuted , built-in speakers when unplugged,
