Thread: Network Drive Activity

hi everyone,

might little bit off-topic i'm sure out there have idea ...

have lacie networkspace network drive works fine ubuntu: plug in , visible.

drive has private (password protected) area , public area (no password) , plugs router (standard lan cable). when have connection drive flickers , active (even when not transfering or accessing files). when shut down pc drive still flickers , whirrs indicating activity. worry here somehow drive being accessed internet.

have thoughts on this? should maybe stop being paranoid , trust firewall? there other tests can do? there ports should block?

many tips can give me.

yours,
alan searle

you being paranoid since isps block cifs access on internet, however, if not in "western country", should paranoid. i've seen crazy isp network setups in less developed countries place huge groups of isp customers on same subnet - allowing access each client didn't block.

many home routers have doors or huge bugs. if still running stock firmware, possible on internet has changed settings , **is** accessing internal network. there automatic tools these days. if didn't change default password on router too.

thing device "phoning home" manufacturer. more , more devices doing this, including home cisco/linksys routers, media players, etc.

i've scared you, solutions can offer?
* buy network equipment trust, vendors trust.
* homes, routers support dd-wrt, openwrt and/or tomato replacement firmware. after device home, replace vendor firmware 1 of those. choose f/loss on commercial if option.
* businesses, commercial-grade routers. if designed house, not designed corporate environment. can still deploy f/loss router solutions - put pfsense box in @ monastery in kathmandu. these more complex home routers, provide more capability.
* block inbound ports default on internet.
* block non-tcp/udp protocols default on internet.
* block ipv6 in forms, unless understand , need it. need block ipv6 tunnels on ipv4 default.
* allow outbound ports specific target ports/protocols. home routers fail , networking becomes more complex. basically, dns, http, imaps , smtps should allowed - last 2 specific servers know , use. not allow outbound smtp random address on internet.
* if don't know need it, block outbound port , protocol default.

of stuff can accomplish home router firmware. of it, cannot. doesn't mean or cracked.
