Thread: No sound in 12.04 64-bit

i have finished upgrading every computer in house ubuntu 12.04. and, bad luck have it, machine that's had issues belongs wife. worse luck have it, problem machine sound doesn't work -- , listens lot of classical music @ computer. so, friends, in interest of keeping guy out of digital doghouse, ask help.

should add sound on machine worked fine under ubuntu 10.10, on machine until 2 months ago. no hardware has changed. , make working soundwise, burned off ubuntu 10.04.4 dvd last night , booted it. no problems -- worked fine. boot 12.04 , it's doghouse time again. no, nothing muted. no, headphones don't work. yes, speakers turned on. yes, i've tried pavucontrol, alsamixer, made of choosing right output device. i've tried other solutions proffered on other forums, including deleting .pulse, fiddling alsa-base.conf (i restored original), etc.

fwiw, suggestion yielded partial success appending line
code:
options snd-hda-intel model=generic
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. got rear right , left speakers working in hardware list reduced 1 option -- basic analog stereo output.

hardware involved detailed in attached lshw output. assume relevant info in lshw this:

code:
id: multimedia
description: audio device
product: rs880 hdmi audio [radeon hd 4200 series]
vendor: hynix semiconductor (hyundai electronics)
physical id: 5.1
bus info: pci@0000:01:05.1

width: 32 bits
clock: 33mhz
capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list
configuration:
driver = snd_hda_intel
latency = 0
resources:
irq : 19
memory : feae8000-feaebfff
the doghouse cramped , nights still cold. appreciated!

general approach audio bugs
1. open system settings , select sound control
2. select output tab , run built in test

sound has go amplifier. debugging amplifiers little beyond scope of forum . fundamentally need work amp know works: test using computer similar set . note amps stereo, or surround sound, surround sound can 5.1 or 7.1 format

once connected amp know works run test sound option on system settings panel . should allow test each channel .

if can't of output options work have problem on mother board or bad device driver .

if sound worked "ok" different o/s it's device driver issue . suitable dac or sound card amazon or newegg
