Thread: Problem installing 13.04 on Dell, separate drive to Win 7

hi all, i've scoured web solution problem, decided sign here ask if can me out.

have new work computer, i've been meaning install ubuntu onto weeks, projects far easier work on using unix, windows, it's dell precision m6700.

so, before had it, woman sorts out our machines asked dell install windows 7 in uefi mode @ request. dell, unsurprisingly, didn't bother , installed in legacy mode (probably imaged , didn't install fresh @ all). haven't had time re-install myself, has 64bit bios windows 7 (with usual stuff mbr rather gpt, etc).

rather mess around that, i've put spare drive , trying install ubuntu onto that. i've downloaded 64 bit 13.04, made bootable usb. when hit f12, offers me multiple legacy boot options (both drives, usb, dvd, network) , 1 uefi option (usb). if try legacy usb, says "invalid partition table!", if try uefi usb, boots install mode fine. that's fine anyway, want install uefi, gpt, etc.

go through install, pick 2nd drive, create partitions , installs fine. restart, f12 again, , 2nd drive appears in legacy boot option , not in uefi. if try booting that, says invalid partition table. i've removed windows hard drive ensure can't see 1 drive.

i'm pretty confused can do. can't install in bios/legacy mode, can install in uefi mode won't boot. if can offer advice hugely appreciated, if more info required i'm happy provide as can. there must easy way this, knowing dell, it's being crap on machines!

how did make usb? if windows uses legacy mode, wouldn't make sense keep whole machine legacy mode?
