Thread: Ubuntu 12.10 on Macbook Pro 6,2 - experiences

i installed ubuntu 12.10 on macbook pro 6,2. wanted summarize experiences benefit of others.

what works:
pretty works out of box
components dont deliver best experience though

what miss:
graphics switching wont work. see discrete graphics card (nvidia) , ubuntu wont see integrated card. see integrated , wont see discrete card. did not invest time in when either happens.
microphone sucks. there lot of echo , listener cannot make talking.
multitouch - not works out of box. can try add-ons touchegg success vary.
right-click on touchpad - use 2 finger tap. can use synclient set right-click area did not work me , not vested in making work. 2 finger tap fine.
battery stats messed up. panel indicator stuck @ %charge @ boot time. when clicked on icon, show charge remaining or time full charge.
fans run @ higher speeds of time in unity. compiz takes minimum of 8%-10% dual monitor setup. using cinnamon or ubuntu classic results in lower fan speeds.
battery life shorter
wireless laggy. ssh sessions remote system seem laggy. on same connection, same mbp, os x , windows connection extremely smooth , stable
bluetooth works there quirks if decide turn off , on.
power saving features bad. if run powertop , use set lot of "bad" things "good", improves, however, suspend+resume fail. did not try root cause component prevents successful resume. if leave as-is in powertop tunables, suspend+resume works fine. did not test hibernate.
magic mouse works jerky, overly sensitive , scrolling slow. can tune follows:

http://numberformatdata.wordpress.co...s-with-ubuntu/
http://patrickmylund.com/blog/loweri...n-ubuntu-9-10/

using these tips, not able magic mouse work smoothly. irritating , productivity. touchpad more usable.

installation:
installation not straight forward. require lot of work , backup before start install. however, if put mind it, can successful install without trouble. cannot emphasize how easy if created sufficiently large partition when making 1 windows using bootcamp. did hard way. install windows, resize os x partition , created 1 ubuntu. not take path unless fearless , ready put in work.

tweaking required touchpad , wifi working initially. use bcmwl module instead of default (b43, bcma, bcm43xx). improves connection stability.

add following ppa , install packages:
https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa

overall, not think worth trouble run ubuntu on mbp. point magic mouse, mic quality, lack of graphics switching , battery life down sides. rather stick nice pc hardware , enjoy ubuntu on that.

tl,dr: install if want it, ubuntu, apple hardware , battery life experience suffers.

thank ubrox sharing!
tried ubuntu 12.10 in bootable usb , found of same issues. battery , fans.
