Thread: Hard drive may be dead

my friend has been having strange issues hard drive after installing ubuntu. os freezes after loging in , can't except turn computer off button. upon trying install windows on computer (just thinking ubuntu dosnt hardware) found windows couldnt install it's self on drive. realizing drive issue decided further investigation. put drive ubuntu computer , planned format , fine, wrong. drive shows in nautilus cant mount it, in gparted main problem see there no partition table. when try create partition table prompted message:

input/output error during read on /dev/sdb

after reading on internet little have become concerned. have done multiple thing fix no results. please drive brand-new , i'm afraid might dead.

thx help.

in ubuntu type "disks" in dash , open app.
if disk listed in red on left panel there errors.
can click on 'more actions' button @ top right choose 'smart data , tests' more info , run tests.
